Adult Confirmation
Confirmation is the sacrament through which the baptized receive a fuller outpouring of the Holy Spirit and are strengthened for the Christian life. Just as Baptism begins the life of grace, Confirmation strengthens and deepens what God first began there.
At Pentecost, the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles and transformed fearful disciples into bold witnesses of the Gospel. The same Holy Spirit continues to be given to the Church today. Through the laying on of hands and the anointing with sacred chrism, those receiving Confirmation are strengthened by the gifts of the Holy Spirit and equipped to live and share the faith with confidence.
From the earliest days of the Church, this gift of the Spirit has been handed on through the Apostles and their successors. Through the bishop, the successor of the Apostles, the Church continues this apostolic ministry and strengthens believers for their vocation as disciples of Christ.
For adults entering the Church, Confirmation is ordinarily celebrated together with Baptism and the Eucharist. These three sacraments form the Sacraments of Initiation, fully incorporating a person into the life of the Church.
Confirmation is not the end of the Christian life, nor simply another box to check. It is the strengthening of the gifts first received in Baptism and a call to live the faith more fully. Strengthened by the Holy Spirit, Christians are called to grow in holiness, participate in the life of the Church, and proclaim the Gospel through both word and action.
